Who We Are

Douglas Hill Hay & Straw Merchants have been a trusted supplier to the equine industry for over 50 years. We provide high quality hay, haylage, straw and bedding throughout the South East.

Founded in 1968 by Douglas Hill, the business began in Basildon before relocating in 1980 to the family farm in West Hanningfield. This enabled greater production, storage and distribution.

Today, we are one of Essex’s leading suppliers known for our commitment to quality, reliability and customer satisfaction. We take pride in producing and sourcing premium forage and bedding to support the health and well-being of horses and livestock.

The Team

Jo Hill

Proprietor

Joanna is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business and has been in this role since 2001. She covers all the admin and also loves going out on the odd delivery to meet her customers face to face. Jo enjoys horse-riding and competes on a regular basis with her horse Phoenix. She also has a homebred mare called Tammy who is in early retirement. Jo has a son called Joshua who was born in 2020. He keeps his mum on her toes and is already showing an interest in the horses and business!

Douglas Hill

Proprietor

Douglas is still involved with the business on a daily basis, particularly enjoying overseeing haymaking and harvest operations while liaising with contractors. Born in 1943, he is a keen horseman and only hung up his boots in 2023. Over the years, he has bred well over 100 foals and still welcomes a few new ones each year.

Mark

Mark has been working for us since 2006. He enjoys the variety of the job and being out in the countryside. The strong team dynamic and friendships outside of work make his job even more enjoyable. Outside of work, he and his son enjoy watching anything motorsport-related and spending time with friends.

Mike

Mike lives in Maldon with his better half, Emma. He’s worked for Hills for 4 years. The part he enjoys most is seeing the customers—most of them are always happy, pleasant, and appreciative. His hobbies include cars and motorbikes. He’s been in the VW scene for many years, having owned old Beetles and vans, but is now getting more into faster, track-based vehicles. He’s also a regular visitor to the gym and enjoys making things out of old or broken objects. An interesting fact: he moved up from Devon nearly 10 years ago, where he worked in a factory and was a firefighter. He ended up in Essex working on a farm delivering hay and bedding products—how’s that for irony?

Joe

Joe has been working for us for six years, having previously worked at a salvage yard specialising in car repairs. He enjoys the fact that every day is different, always meeting new customers, which makes the job fun and the time pass quickly. His main hobby is football—he plays three times a week and is currently a member of Stanway Rovers. He has a beautiful daughter named Lottie and a partner named Jodie. He loves spending as much time with them as possible, and seeing his little girl at football matches when he is playing makes him a proud dad.

Liam

Liam has been part of the team for 5 years. The best part of his job is the amazing group of people he works with. The collaborative and supportive environment makes every day enjoyable for him. Outside of work, he is passionate about football—whether playing or watching, it’s something that keeps him active and engaged. An interesting fact about him is that he can't speak Spanish.

Hay

Each haymaking season we produce between 50,000 and 60,000 conventional small bales of high-quality hay. These are bundled into Bale Baron packs - each pack containing 21 uniform bales for easy handling and efficient transport.

In addition to conventional bales, we also offer a range of larger bale formats to suit different customer needs and equipment setups. These include round bales, 4-string bales and 6-string bales.

Our hay is available in two main types: traditional meadow hay and nutrient-rich ryegrass hay.

From time-to-time we also have second grade produce available. This may include marked or weathered bales. These are ideal for those that do not need top quality or may be on a budget! Please contact us for further information.

Haylage

As one of the largest haylage producers in the South East, the operation focuses primarily on a carefully balanced mix of meadow grasses, Westerwold and Italian ryegrass. For those seeking nutritional specifics, a full analysis is available upon request.

A variety of bale sizes are typically kept in stock to suit different needs, including Euro Bales (approximately 140kg), 80x90’s (around 220kg), and Quadrants (ranging from 300–350kg).

We are also stockists of EH Haylage. These are 20kg bales, ideal for those stay away shows and smaller users!

Straw

A substantial quantity of conventional bale wheat and barley straw is produced during harvest season, carefully bundled into 21 Bale Baron packs. These packs are designed for ease of handling, storage and transport. This makes them a practical choice for a variety of agricultural and equestrian needs.

In addition to small bale production, we also produce big bale straw to meet the demands of both individual contracts and the wider open market. These big bales are ideal for high-volume users and can be tailored to specific requirements.

Bedding

We stock premium brands including Hunter, Bed-Down, Blue Frog, MegaFlake and Nedz. Our bedding solutions are designed to cater to a range of needs offering comfort, hygiene and ease of maintenance. From highly absorbent and dust-free options to eco-friendly choices, our products help create a clean, dry, and comfortable environment for your horses. With a focus on quality and performance, we offer bedding that promotes both horse health and convenience for horse owners.
